Thailand 2 Baht

A new addition to Thailand's monetary system. These complete's the binary system in the countries coinage. The image on this coin is of the current Royal Head, H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej the great and on the other side is one of the a historical Buddhist temple in the country, Wat Saket (Saket Temple) located in Bangkok itself. The coin is mostly made out of Nickel and Steel with the diameter of 21.75 mm. Someone gave me this coin from his recent trip to Bangkok las month. One US dollar is equivalent to 33 Baht as of the date of this post.

I believe the image of the baby is of the newest son of Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, the heir apparent to the Thai Kingdon. The prince just turn one last year. This coin is new and is not in most World Coin Catalouge.

This coin is to commemorate the
13th Asian Games
held in Bangkok BE2541 (1998)

This coin was actually in circulation and my first ever Thai coins were one of these. I first visited Thailand back in 1997. All Thai coins bear the image of Rama IX. The regular coins have temples or palace images on the reverse side. The Thai King is highly revered by the local so even stepping on a coin is offensive and could get you into trouble or could land you in jail. There is no tolerance on tourists or visitors unawareness of this Law.

Diameter: 2.54cm/1in, Brass center in Copper and Nickel Ring

The standard 10-Baht coin is a silver ring with a brass center. The size very similar to 2euros. The coin replace a 10 baht note in the early 1990's but sometime you still run across this bill from time to time. I got mine in 1997 when I first visited Bangkok. Thailand issues several commemorative 10 baht each year, the most so far is in 2004, when they minted at least 7 commemorative coins. The Most of these you don't see in circulation but available in local coin dealer shops, at the international airport and souvenir shops around the country especially in Bangkok. Although, the Kanchanapisek (Golden Jubilee) Version, minted the same year as the above coin which commemorates the kings 50th anniversary of his reign is very common in circulation. To date there are at least 40 coins of 10 baht which commemorates an event.

A Medal or A Coin?

A MEDAL? FOR WHAT?

Year 2004, I was back in Laos again to visit my sister who was teaching English in Vientiane and to see friends (I lived there for I think 6 years, between 1997-2004) As usual when I visit a city I go looking for a coin anywhere in between my catching up with friends and site seeing. When I lived in Laos I have never bought a single coin, I found one on the street. Anyway, this time was different. I didn't really know where to buy them but as Laos try to attract more tourist to come they have managed to fix a few landmarks including the famous and one of the country's symbol "Patuxai" or Victory Monument, built in 1969, resembling Arc de Triumph in Paris) on Lane Xang Avenue in the Capital of Vientiane. This time the inside doesn't have this musty punget smell anymore instead they have stalls of souvenirs etc. I was excited of course, I paid like 2 bucks or more to get in and up there. That's where I found my next "medal" here, this souvenir. I am not quite sure what this is. I am sure it's Thai and it's King Chulalongkorn The Great of Thailand or Rama V (1868-1910) but other than that I have no idea. Information is welcome, specially the date.

Note: Searching an hour later after I posted this one I found out (not confirmed) that this is a 1908 1 Baht, KM-Y39, and a website is selling this for $75.oo The real one are apparently very rare. There are very good counterfeits / counterfeits produced around however selling for $15. I have no idea if mine is authentic or not, unlike the counterfeit one and the one selling for $75, mine doesn't have a crown on the 3-headed Elephant
